"Growing up in the generation that used baby oil and album covers lined with aluminum foil to bake our bodies in the sun has resulted in several personal diagnoses of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and the most feared, melanoma.
Fifteen years ago, at the age of 38, I was diagnosed with my first melanoma. I had attempted to have the mole removed by a dermatologist and a plastic surgeon prior to the diagnosis but was told by both doctors that it was fine and not to worry. As I watched the mole continue to change in appearance I made an appointment with another plastic surgeon who felt it was nothing but I insisted the mole be removed. Within two days, I was in the hospital having surgery to remove the melanoma and was left with a substantial hole in my leg requiring a skin graft. At the age of 40, the melanoma had spread through the lymph channel in my leg. My only hope was experimental surgery at the National Institutes of Health ("NIH") in the form of an isolated limb perfusion. I am happy to report that the surgery was successful and after nine years of intensive follow-up at NIH, I was considered "cured" and released from the program at the age of 49. By this time, the signs of sun damage were very apparent in the form of wrinkles, crow's feet and broken blood vessels, to name a few, so I decided to seek the services of a cosmetic dermatologist.

In October of 2005, she spotted a mole on my arm during a routine skin check that resulted in another melanoma diagnosis, only this time it was considered "in situ" or superficial because it was caught so early. Not only did Dr. Skellchock get me through this melanoma physically, she was there for me emotionally as well. In fact, during my next routine skin check I broke down in tears from fear of her discovering another melanoma. She stopped the skin check, held my hands and taught me a breathing exercise that I use till this day when faced with a stressful situation.
